Passing of Member James H. "Jay" Hills

he Officers and Members of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. sadly announce the passing of member James H. “Jay” Hills on Tuesday, September 17, 2019.

Jay joined the department in February 1991. Though he was inactive at the time of his passing, Jay leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to the Department and the citizens of St. Mary’s County.

STATEWIDE, September 18, 2019 - The Office of the State Fire Marshal has seen numerous burn injuries as a result of open air burning this month. State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci would like to remind residents about the necessary steps to reduce their risk of injury while conducting an open air burn.

Bay District Honors Our Fallen

On Sunday, September 15th the members of Bay District VFD and guests gathered to honor our members that has passed since our memorial service last year and also to dedicate our newest apparatus, Rescue Engine 92 to Past Fire Chief Doug Medley. Their names have been added to the Firefighter Memorial outside of the Braddock Hall at our Lexington Park Station.

Mechanicsville Volunteers, August 20

At 1709 hours as storms were rolling thru the North End, Company 2 and surrounding departments were dispatched for a house fire at 36975 Dixie Lyon Rd, the caller reported smoke from an upstairs window. Engine 23 responded immediately, clearing a fire alarm at White Marsh Elementary, Tanker 24 responded immediately from Station 2 as well.

At approximately noon today, Chief 10 was enroute to Prince Frederick to meet with other officers from CALS. While driving northbound on Rt-4 @ Broomes Island Rd a car decided to make the left hand turn across southbound Rt-4 onto Broomes Island Rd and failed to see a car traveling southbound. Engine 75 is a 1988 Ford F350 Pierce Mini Pumper. IEngine 75 has a 250 GPM Waterous pump with a 250 gallon tank. Engine 75 holds 500 feet of 3 inch supply hose, 200 feet of 2 inch hose, 200 feet of 1 3/4 hose, and 150 feet of 1 inch booster line.
