The Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association joins emergency services organizations across the nation in recognizing National EMS Week, May 17–23, 2026, and honoring the emergency medical services clinicians who provide lifesaving care throughout our communities.

This year’s national EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlights the importance of teamwork among EMS providers, 911 communications personnel, hospitals, fire departments, law enforcement, public health agencies, emergency management partners, and the communities they serve. The theme reflects the daily coordination required to deliver timely, effective care when residents need help most.

Across Southern Maryland, volunteer EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, emergency vehicle operators, dispatchers, and support personnel play a vital role in the region’s emergency response system. Whether responding to medical emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, fires, hazardous conditions, or large-scale incidents, EMS providers are often among the first to arrive and begin care.

“EMS Week gives us an opportunity to recognize the men and women who provide calm, skilled, and compassionate care in some of the most difficult moments our residents may face,” the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association said. “Their work reflects the very best of community service, and their partnerships with hospitals, public safety agencies, and local volunteers help improve outcomes every day.”

National EMS Week is also a time to educate the public about the essential role EMS plays beyond emergency response. EMS clinicians support injury prevention, community risk reduction, emergency preparedness, public education, and patient care coordination. This year’s observance also emphasizes collaboration, communication, provider wellness, and innovation in prehospital care.

The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians notes that EMS Week is a time to thank EMTs and paramedics while also raising awareness about the critical services they provide. The 2026 observance includes daily focus areas such as health and wellness, EMS education, safety, EMS for children, CPR and bleeding control awareness, EMS recognition, and remembrance.

The Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association extends its appreciation to every EMS provider serving local communities, including career, volunteer, hospital-based, private, military, and public safety partners. Their commitment helps ensure that residents and visitors receive professional emergency medical care whenever and wherever it is needed.

Residents are encouraged to take part in EMS Week by thanking local EMS personnel, learning CPR, becoming familiar with automated external defibrillators, supporting local volunteer fire and EMS departments, and considering service as a volunteer responder.

For more information about supporting your local volunteer fire and EMS company, contact your nearest department or follow the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association and local fire and rescue agencies for community updates, safety information, and volunteer opportunities.
