Elevated Fire Danger Reported Across the Region

By Southern Maryland Volunteers
April 7, 2026

Fire officials are urging residents to use extra caution today as elevated fire danger conditions impact our region through early this evening.

According to the weather advisory, a combination of very dry vegetation, low humidity levels between 15 and 30 percent, and northwesterly wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph is creating conditions that could allow fires to spread rapidly. The greatest risk is expected during the afternoon and early evening hours.

These conditions mean that dry grasses, leaves, and other ground litter can ignite easily and carry fire quickly, especially when exposed to sparks, open flames, or improperly discarded smoking materials.

Residents and visitors are asked to take the following precautions:

  • Properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers.
  • Use extreme caution when operating equipment that may create sparks.
  • Keep vehicles off dry grass to prevent accidental ignition from hot exhaust systems.
  • Follow all local burn bans and restrictions.

Fire departments throughout the region remain prepared to respond, but officials stress that prevention is the best defense during periods of elevated wildfire risk. Even a small spark can quickly become a fast-moving brush or wildfire under these weather conditions.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed by checking with their state forestry or environmental protection agency for updates on wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and fire prevention information.

Fire Prevention Tip: Never toss cigarettes or smoking materials onto the ground or out of a vehicle window, especially during dry and windy conditions.
