The Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department recently recognized Past President SMVFA Randy Smith for an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of dedicated service to the department and the community.

During a recent business meeting, Smith was presented with an award by President Dave Stream and Fire Chief Eddie Catterton in honor of his five decades of commitment, leadership, and service. Surrounded by fellow members, Smith was celebrated for a legacy that has helped shape the department from its earliest days.

A founding charter member of the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department, Smith has played a vital role in building the organization into what it is today. Over the years, he has served in several key leadership positions, including President, Vice President, and Assistant Chief. Notably, he was the department’s first African American President, helping pave the way for future generations of leaders.

Smith’s impact has extended well beyond Dunkirk. He previously served as President and Vice President of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association and represented the region on the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Executive Committee. Through those roles, he contributed to efforts focused on legislation, safety, and strengthening the relationship between volunteer fire departments and the communities they serve.

In addition to his leadership in operations and administration, Smith has also worked to preserve the department’s history. As chair of the Historical Committee, he has helped collect and safeguard important pieces of the department’s legacy, including photographs, articles, equipment, and other memorabilia. His efforts have ensured that the stories and service of past members will be remembered for years to come.

Smith’s decades of dedication have earned him recognition across the state. In 2022, he was inducted into the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame. In 2023, he received the Malcolm Funn Community Service Award from the NAACP Calvert Branch. These honors reflect a lifetime of service, advocacy, and community involvement.

Fifty years of service represents countless calls answered, thousands of hours given, and a lasting commitment to mentoring and supporting others. Randy Smith’s influence can be seen throughout the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department and in the many lives he has touched along the way.

The department proudly congratulates Randy Smith on 50 years of exceptional service and thanks him for his unwavering dedication to Dunkirk and the fire service.
