A Tradition of Reverence and Respect

Bells will ring in firehouses, churches, and public spaces from coast to coast, honoring firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2025 and previous years. This symbolic ringing echoes a solemn fire service tradition with deep roots.

“The tolling of the bell has always been a significant part of the fire service,” said an NFFF spokesperson. “From calling firefighters to duty to marking a final farewell, it’s a language of respect understood by all.”

Historically, bells were a firefighter’s lifeline. Long before modern communication tools, bells were used to summon crews, signal shift changes, and announce a unit’s safe return. When a firefighter died in the line of duty, departments across the country would sound a special signal - Five-Five-Five - a tradition still honored in some cities today.

How to Take Part

The NFFF encourages fire departments, religious institutions, and community organizations to organize local bell-ringing ceremonies at any time leading up to or during Memorial Weekend. Participants are urged to work with clergy and civic leaders to craft meaningful tributes that reflect the spirit of their communities.
