On March 4th at approximately 1245 hours, Hughesville Volunteers were alerted to the 38000 block of Pleasant View Dr in Charlotte Hall, St Mary’s County for the shed fire. Chief 2, Chief 2A, Engine Tanker 2 and Tanker 2 made the initial response. Engine Tanker 2 was first arriving and found a shed fire that extended to the woods, a utility trailer and side Bravo of an attached garage. A working fire assignment was requested in addition to several brush trucks due to the rapidly spreading fire. The crew quickly went to work extinguishing the fire threatening the house and garage. Tanker 2 arrived and initially began supplying the fire ground until additional units arrived and began tanker shuttles. Once the additional resources were requested, Brush 2 and UTV 2 made the response. Engine Tanker 2’s crew came across two victims of the fire and requested EMS resources. One victim was later flown by Maryland State Police Aviation to a burn center. Units from Mechanicsville, Dentsville, Hollywood, La Plata, Avenue, Waldorf and other departments worked together to extinguish the fire. Once the fire was brought under control, Waldorf Tower 3 was repositioned and utilized to soak the area and contain any remaining hot spots. While fighting the initial fire, a secondary brush fire threatening a house was discovered across the street from embers that blew across the street due to the winds. That fire was quickly brought under control with Chief 2 heading the attack group. Forestry responded to the scene to assist with the brush fire and remained on scene after units cleared. St Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with citizen traffic that came to the area making it difficult for responding emergency vehicles to navigate the roadways. Red Cross was requested to assist the occupants of the residence. Hughesville Volunteers operated on the scene for just over 3 hours before being released. We would like to thank Bryan’s Road Engine Tanker 11 and St Leonard Engine 72 for filling in at our station while units operated to ensure coverage for our area. |
