By Bay District Volunteers
October 25, 2023

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 3:31 p.m., the dedicated emergency responders of Station 9 received an urgent call from Calvert County Communications regarding an auto accident with entrapment on the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge.

Upon arrival at the scene, first responders were met with a harrowing sight - a head-on style collision involving two vehicles, with the occupants of both vehicles trapped inside.

Quick and coordinated action by firefighters from Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department (Solomons VRSFD) and Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (Bay District VFD) led to the successful extrication of both patients in a remarkable time of under 20 minutes.

The gravity of the situation required immediate medical attention for the injured parties. Maryland State Police Helicopters Trooper 2 and Trooper 7 swiftly landed at nearby landing zones and transported the two patients to area trauma centers for critical care.

Remarkably, a third patient, chose to sign refusal forms and declined further medical treatment at the scene.

However, the heroic efforts of our first responders came at a cost, as a firefighter from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department sustained a hand injury during the operation. The injured firefighter was later airlifted to MedStar Union Memorial by Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7. We are relieved to report that he has since been treated and released, exemplifying the resilience and dedication of our emergency services personnel.

This incident serves as a testament to the incredible professionalism, expertise, and quick response of our local emergency services. Their unwavering commitment to public safety and well-coordinated efforts in critical situations ensures the best possible outcomes for those in need.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the agencies involved and commend their selfless dedication to the well-being of our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this incident, and we wish the injured parties a swift and full recovery.
