By Mechanicsville Volunteers
August 14, 2018

On August 14 at 1840 hours, Car 2, Rescue Squad 2, Utility 2, UTV 2, and Brush 2 responded to the 26000 Block of Meadow Wood Dr. In Country Lakes for a Animal Rescue. Engine 23 also made the response later on in the incident after handling another emergency in the first due.

Units arrived to find a horse had become stuck in a large hole within a ravine deep in the woods. The ground level was as high as the horses back and the horses rear legs had slid forward under it's body making access for lifting difficult. A veterinarian and excavator were requested while crews attempted several different evolution's to allow the horse to get it's rear legs under it.

After several hours, a small excavator was able to dig around the horse and create a slope that allowed crews to pull the horse up and out of the hole. Once out of the hole, the animal was able to receive fluids and veterinarian care.

Units from Company 2 and 5 operated for approximately five hours before returning to service.

Unfortunately, the decision was made by the owner and veterinarians to euthanize the animal this morning. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family.

Units: Car 2, Rescue Squad 2, Engine 23, Utility 2, UTV 2, and Brush 2

Mutual Aid: Animal Control and Brush 5
